About Kathleen

Join accomplished artist and painting instructor Kathleen Jacobs for a painting workshop excursion. Your group will have your own personal local guide. We invite you to immerse yourself in an enriching and creative experience that will expand your painting practice and experience. Students of intermediate to advanced levels are welcome, open to all painters using oil, watercolor, acrylic or gouache.

Kathleen Jacobs will provide individualized instruction during plein air excursions, demonstrations, discussions and presentations that will provide the format for an intensive exciting learning experience. The focus is on the architecture and landscape in each location, where you will experience first hand the beauty and richness of the land. Jacobs will emphasize the importance of drawing and composition as a foundation of a painting.

Working small, participants will work to create work with a spirit of place. Her teaching emphasizes looking at the landscape and to understand the formal elements of painting, shape, color, space, form while responding to the grace, order and beauty that is in front of you. There will be ample opportunity to discuss each other’s work and to discuss other international painters throughout history to enrich our experience.

Had lots of time to draw and paint outside in beautiful weather. Beautiful landscapes and interesting ancient ruins to study and photograph.

Hi Jacque, Oh my goodness! Best vacation ever! Excellent guide, great stories & history lessons, folklore.  He is full of life and heart. Perfect amount of instruction from Kathleen. She is a great teacher, so generous and encouraging. I just had the very best time…I’m exhausted from hard work and fun! Kathleen, Connie and Dennis, you just can’t do any better than those three! Thanks so much, Sally

Thank you for sharing your love for the land and the people. Thank you especially for helping me see the beauty of clouds, of reflections of reeds in water, of silvery halos illuminating foxgloves in the forest, and of sunshine-patterned abbey windows on wet gravestones. Thanks to you, I leave with a new appreciation for the wonder and beauty of the world.

I took a workshop from Kathleen Jacobs this past summer in Gloucester, MA and am still thanking her for the invaluable painting tools I took away from the week. Kathleen is very knowledgeable about painting and drawing. The days flew by as she made painting a fun adventure at some beautiful, interesting spots in the area. We worked with a view finder every day to produce many thumbnail sketches, keeping in mind the form and structure of the landscape.  We then worked with a selected thumbnail to produce a painting. Working small placed an emphasis on simplicity and finding the structure of the landscape. This process, thumbnails and working small, allowed us to produce several paintings each day.  It really helped me make better decisions about my paintings. People in the workshop came from all skill levels and Kathleen successfully worked with each and every one of them. The group was very giving and if someone needed some paint or forgot something we all pitched in. Landscape painting is a tough endeavor and Kathleen made it a fun and accessible process and brought the group together. I highly recommend her as an instructor and cannot wait to take another workshop with her.

Jacque, I can’t say enough about how wonderful our bus driver Tommy, and guide Connie were to us during our 10 days. (Impeccable professionals and perfect gentleman to help us at any moment.) Also, Emmajane was a fabulous chef and Alan’s home was just perfect for our group. We walked to town for music in the evenings. Our instructor Kathleen Jacobs, was generous with her expertise and flexible enough to assess each students needs. This experience exceeded expectations. Not only were the Irish scenes spectacular, but it was just the perfect mix of touring the countryside and painting instruction. The bus was extremely comfortable. Thanks! I hope you consider offering more painting-based trips, in addition to your photography classes.
