Northern Ireland Photo Tour

Tour Intro

Donegal Peninsula - Giant's Causeway - Antrim Coast - Belfast

Explore and photograph Northern Ireland on this unique photo tour with Eileen McCarney Muldoon. Although the tour begins and ends in Belfast, the itinerary also encompasses the Donegal Peninsula of Ireland. It is good to know that visitors can freely travel by road between Ireland and Northern Ireland without any concerns other than having some Sterling & Euro currencies with you. The six counties of Northern Ireland emerged from the shadow of The Troubles some time ago, and now it’s actually difficult to know when you have even crossed the border.
This photo tour itinerary of the Donegal Peninsula, Londonderry, the Glen’s of Antrim, & Giant’s Causeway opens up the discerning photographer to a combination of seascapes, landscapes, culture, and ancient ruins. Donegal forms the northwestern corner of Ireland, and is probably the least explored. Visit the fishing port of Killybegs, Slieve League and Glencolumbkille, an exceptionally peaceful and haunting place. The peninsula provides ample opportunity for documentary photography amidst these charming villages. Northern Ireland boasts one world heritage site, the world’s oldest distillery, historic ruined castles, and some of the most amazing landscape images. Your guides will navigate you to be at the right place at the right light. This is sure to be an unforgettable journey through the splendor that is all of Northern Ireland. If you wish to extend your stay to explore Belfast further on your own, please contact Strabo Tours and we would be pleased to offer some accommodation suggestions.

A note from Eileen ~
I've been told my teaching style is very fluid ~ it changes with each individual student.  Everyone has their own method of learning, so I adapt to you, rather than you having to adapt to different instructors. That is one of the reasons I enjoy leading workshops. It allows me the opportunity to spend individual time with each student.  Travel workshops attract beginner to advanced photographers and it is equally as exciting to see the beginner learn to master the controls of their camera as it is to see the proficient photographer leap to new creative heights. I have seen photography enhance the lives of many students, so I look for ways that each student can apply photography to enrich their life. ~ Eileen

Majority of flights land by 2PM, should your airline of choice land later in Belfast, please contact Strabo Tours as you may have to fly in one day early. Your tour begins as you depart Belfast Airport, traveling northwest towards Londonderry (Ireland) or Derry (referred to by those from Northern Ireland). The city walls have never been breached, you will explore the city sites as well as the outskirts. The Peace Bridge has become an icon of the city as it crosses the Foyle River. Guildhall represents amazing architecture with stunning stained-glass windows. From our accommodations, weather and the right light permitting you will have a photo stop along the North Coast, which is actually in County Donegal at either the Fanad Head or Stroove Lighthouse. Both provide breathtaking views along the coast. Overnight Londonderry (D; B)

After breakfast the group will depart for the Donegal Peninsula. Donegal is known as a lesser-known region, untouched and crying out for exploration. Nature abounds from the sheer granite walls of some of Europe’s highest sea cliffs at Slieve League, but there is warmth and wit to be found among the vibrant, Irish speaking communities. Given time you will travel to the immense beach at Inishowen. This journey will lift your spirits and present huge panoramas that will look different from every segment of the road we travel. Bright azure skies appear next to blue gray, shafts of rain, which bolt sea and sky together. Donegal Bay majestically swoops towards you, with its quaint fishing villages and harbors. Overnight Donegal Peninsula (B, D; B)

September 10-12: Antrim Coast - Giant's Causeway
Dark Hedges

Photo Location: Northern Ireland

Return to Northern Ireland today as you drive along the North Coast past Londonderry. There will be a photo stop along dramatic coastline near the circular Mussenden Temple, perched on a cliff edge high above Downhill Beach. The Hezlett House may provide another photo opportunity, a picturesque late 17th century thatched cottage. A bit east is the Dunluce Castle. One of the jewels on the route, this breathtaking castle ruin has inspired artists and writers such as C.S. Lewis. It is perched dramatically on the cliffs of the North Antrim Coast.

Early the next morning you will need a flashlight as you head to the Giant’s Causeway. Not to be missed on any itinerary is this geological wonder which gives the route its name. The Giant’s Causeway is Northern Ireland’s only World Heritage Site, famously steeped in myth and legend. Legend has it that it was built by Finn MacCool to reach a Scottish giant, when he was challenged to a fight. Other photo opportunities present themselves at the remote Murlough Bay, Carrick-a-Rede Island and bridge originally built by Salmon fishermen. There are several quaint villages, which can be explored such as Portballintrae, Ballintoy, the hamlet of Portbradden with one of the smallest in Ireland, and perhaps the friary at Bonamargy.

Your last day here will be another early morning photo shoot at the Dark Hedges. The dark hedges of the HBO Game of Thrones series is an iconic archway of intertwining beech trees that has become one of Northern Ireland’s most photographed natural phenomena. You will arrive very early to avoid the later day crowds. Traveling to the East today explore Torr Head and photograph the quaint village of Cushendun. Nestled at the foot of Glendun, one of the nine Glens of Antrim. Later in the day you will need to take a break at the heart of Northern Ireland – the oldest working distillery, Bushmill’s. The finest Irish whiskeys have been produced here for over 400 years. Overnight Portballintrae (B, D; B)

As a fine arts photographer and photo instructor, Eileen has lead international photo/travel tours with Profundo Journeys and creative photographic workshops with Olaf Willoughby.  This past year they taught at Maine Media Workshops, exhibited in Providence and led a Street Photography Workshop in Brooklyn, NY.

She has two distinct portfolios. One, in color, is more contemplative work whilst the other reflects a personal way of seeing the environment. These images are quiet observations of the world and those who inhabit its space. Eileen uses natural and ambient light as a means to express emotion. 'My "decisive moment" is when I lose myself to my subject & know there is a complete union.'

Eileen's work has been exhibited at Newport Art Museum, The Providence Art Club, Mystic Arts Center and numerous galleries throughout New England and New York. She also looks forward to an upcoming solo show at Leica Soho in New York in 2016. Eileen has recently been accepted to exhibit at the Fine Art & Documentary Photography Show in Berlin for Women Photographers.  The show in August 2016 will be the largest European Photography Exhibit of the year. Additionally, she has had two books published and is working on number three.

Eileen McCarney Muldoon continues to learn by being a member of The Leica Meet Admin team.

Traveling with Eileen McCarney Muldoon over these last six years has changed my life in so many ways.  I have been to Cuba, Peru and Italy with her as well as partaking in other photography workshops in the United States.

I was in the middle of my second year  in the Rhode Island School  of Design Continuing Education Photography program when the notice for her first trip to Cuba arrived.  Within ten minutes, i made the decision to go. That first trip was life changing  with my photography, travel, instruction and learning and forming life long friendships.  Eileen is an extremely knowledgeable and professional teacher as well as an accomplished photographer and learning from her has been a gift.  She is very patient yet challenges her students to do their best work.

Whether traveling single within the group or with a partner, one feels very welcome and comfortable traveling with Eileen.  Cuba was so amazing that i have been every year since she has done this workshop followed by Peru in ’15 and just returned from an amazing trip in Italy.  I not only would like to but would plan on traveling with Eileen as often as possible in the future to places that i intend on visiting.

Trained agents are available to answer your questions, so don’t hesitate to call the toll free number in their brochure. It is to your advantage to apply for insurance at the earliest possible time, so don’t delay in making a decision.

Subject to Change

Itineraries have been carefully constructed to assure participants the best each destination has to offer; however, should events arise that are beyond our control, activities and hotel arrangements are subject to change without notice.
