The unique interplay of light, shadows, and intense colors make every heart jump! Mother nature has painted a magnificent tapestry of colors with geological phenomena unmatched elsewhere in the world. Inexorably intertwined with this exotic natural environment are the 280,000 Icelanders who along with their Nordic and Celtic ancestors have called this North Atlantic Island their home for over 1100 years.

Photo Leader

Ron Rosenstock

On this, our third trip with Ron and Strabo, I observed a dimension I hadn’t noticed before: flexibility. Ron (and Ingo) were able to dance with the weather. Then I got to thinking. Flexibility, yes, but against a background of careful planning: accommodations, meals, even catering to allergies. I have done enough “self-guided” tours to appreciate what that means.  As Strabo tourists, we simply sat back and watched the ever-changing scenery. And it was a big plus that both guides had visited sites many times before. Again, I thank you for your efforts. We have traveled with other tours. Strabo is by far the best for people like us.

— D.Wurtzel

This is my second photo tour with Ron and I will travel with him again. He is an experienced leader and teacher who is able to share with his group not only his knowledge of photography but his knowledge of the area being visited. I appreciated the addition of the local guide, his personable knowledge really added to the experience. It was fun to get to know a ‘real’ Icelander. I liked that we went all around the whole island. I feel like I have, indeed, seen it all, and that ‘all’ was overwhelming in its beauty and scope.

— Jeanne Procell

Ron – I did not get a chance to tell you that out of the four trips that I have taken with Strabo Tours, your trip has been the most significant in terms of photographic education, knowledge of the working subject and personal experience.  You shared your photographic knowledge and experience with the group and that makes a difference to me. Thank you.  I am looking forward to meeting you again in future travels!

— W.Diaz

Ron was very good and I would definitely go on another trip with him. I’d also like to thank Jacque for her patience with all of my questions. I had a really amazing time and wish it could have lasted longer! I hope to do another Strabo tour in the future.

— A. Gershin

Ron was great, as usual – very open, fair, positive, and inspiring. Local guide was wonderful – extremely knowledgable about Iceland and just about everything. Never stopped working. Iceland had a great balance, the pace was active but not overwhelming. The sights visited were all worthwhile, and I enjoyed the flexibility of stopping for interesting shoots.

— N. Taveras

Ron was delightful as a tour guide, he’s always careful to make sure everyone’s comfortable. Of course, I so enjoy seeing a new country with him. Iceland is so beautiful a country that you can’t do it justice. No one realized how a mazing a country Iceland is!!

— M. Russo

Trip score 20 out of 10!!!I guess the score tells it all. What an unbelievable asset your guides are.

— B. Hayes

Ron, the inspiring teacher, and our Iceland knowledgeable guide, collaborated to make this a trip of a lifetime. Iceland is a photographer’s and a geologist’s dream, the Earth undressed and at work. Constant photographic opportunities for unusual landscapes.

Tour Itinerary

April 30: U.S. - Reykjavik

Your journey to Iceland begins with an overnight flight to Keflavik Airport in Reykjavik, Iceland. Strabo will supply all participants with Ron & Leslie’s flight schedule with Iceland Air from Boston direct to Keflavik (KEF). (meals on plane)

May 1-2: South Coast - Vik

Upon your arrival to Keflavik you will begin the procedures of going through customs together and obtaining your checked luggage. Your driver for the week will be just outside the terminal building, ready to begin your tour. There will be various stops along the way to stretch your legs, get a cup of coffee and enjoy the sights. Vik is famous for amazing coastal features of black sand beaches and picturesque rocks that line the seashore including columnar basalt grottoes, sea stacks, and bird cliffs. Overnight Vik (B, D; B)

May 3-5: Skaftafell

The Skaftafell National Park is located by the roots of the Vatnajökull glacier. Europe’s largest icecap – larger than all other glaciers in Europe combined. Skaftafell really is a land of fire and ice! It is filled with volcanic remains and covered with glaciers. The melting glaciers, create large rivers that give rise to beautiful waterfalls, like the popular Svartifoss. Plus the lush landscape is beautiful, green, and filled with flowers in the summer.

One day will be a day trip traveling northeast to the fantastic glacial lagoon, Jökulsárlón, where floating icebergs, all sizes, and shapes, will blow you away. Overnight Skaftafell (B, D; B; B)

May 6: Skogar

Skógar is a southern Icelandic village with a small population of around 25 inhabitants and its name translates to ‘forest’. It is surrounded by lush green pastures with Skógafoss waterfall marking the landmark of the village. It is said that the village was settled by a Viking named Þrasi Þórólfsson who hid some treasure behind the Skógafoss waterfall. The rainbow emerging from the underneath is believed to be the reflection of the gold which is hidden under the water. Not too far away is another spectacular waterfall Seljalandsfoss. Overnight Skogar (B, D)

May 7: Reykjavik

There will be more waterfalls and landscapes to see as you return to Western Iceland. Reykjavik is the northernmost capital in the world, although it is one of the smallest. There are sights to be hold that the city is famous for. The Sun Voyager is a beautiful sculpture in the image of a Viking ship, honoring the settlers that first sailed to Iceland.

Hallgrimskirkja, is the majestic church is one of Reykjavík’s most iconic buildings and is visible from almost anywhere in the city. The tower of the church is among the city’s highest buildings and offers a fantastic view over the city and its surroundings. Overnight Reykjavik (B, D)

May 8: Keflavik - Home

Enjoy a leisurely morning in your city hotel. Your guide will pick everyone up after you have checked out of your hotel and continue touring the City of Reykjavik and the West Coast of Iceland. You will then be returned to the airport for evening flights home. (B)
