Experience the vast volcanic landscape, breathtaking glaciers, seek out the Northern Lights, and hardy Viking hospitality that have been celebrated for centuries in Icelandic sagas. We can’t predict the weather, however, this is one of the most opportune times of year to capture the Northern Lights. Mother nature has painted a magnificent tapestry of colors with geological phenomena unmatched elsewhere in the world. On this unique expedition, view towering volcanic pillars and hike to stunning waterfalls. At every turn, the vistas will astound you.

As this is an active expedition with moderate hikes, you should be in good physical condition. While hotels selected are the best available, accommodations are basic with a private bath in each room.

Tour Itinerary

March 26: Home

Your journey to Iceland begins with an overnight flight to Keflavik Airport (KEF).

March 27: Vik - South Coast

Your flight will need to land prior to 7:30AM this morning. If your airline of choice lands later in the day you will need to depart one day earlier and Strabo Tours can recommend hotels close to the airport and the Keflavik Harbor.

Your journey begins as your local driver guide follows the light to such photogenic stops as Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss waterfalls. Continue on to the picturesque black sand beach of Reynisfjara. It’s all about the light, water, motion and reflections. If the group has enough energy your guides will lead you on a walk to a quaint Icelandic Church. Overnight Vik (D)

March 28-30: Jokulsarlon Ice Lagoon - Vestrahorn

Your home base for the next three evenings will be close to the Jökulsárlón Ice Lagoon. Along the way or on your return from the lagoon (weather dependent) you will visit Skaftafell National Park, which is located, by the roots of Vatnajökull glacier, the biggest one in Europe. Skaftafell, a natural wonderland of powerful glaciers, turbulent waterfalls, lush birch woodlands, and vibrant wildflowers. Depending on the weather you can go on a glacial hike for unique photography inside an actual ice cave to capture a different world of ice. (photo courtesy Dan Anderson) Spend a day at the fantastic glacial lagoon, Jökulsárlón, where floating icebergs, all sizes and shapes, will blow you away. From your hotel you can also reach the Vestrahorn Mountain region. Vestrahorn is a photographer’s paradise for the dramatic landscape and vast beauty. The shore features stunning lava dunes, that are constantly being shaped by the natural forces of water and wind. It is possible to get perfect reflections in the wet sand. Seals also tend to hang out on the stretch of sand as well. (B, D each day)
