Faroe Islands Far and Away

Your journey to the Faroe Islands begins with an overnight flight to Vagar Airport (FAE), near the Village of Torshavn. (Meals on plane)

You’ll want to arrive early this afternoon as there will be an introductory meeting 5PM or after, followed by a welcome dinner. Everyone will be transferred to the hotel. If you decide to add on additional evenings, please contact Strabo Tours and we can request. (Dinner included)

The islands are relatively small and driving to various locations is more weather dependent than location dependent, therefore the following are various photographic locations your guides will plan on reaching; however it may not be possible to visit all of them on your journey.

You will feel like you are in an episode of the Game of Thrones, exploring this remote and mysterious land alongside fellow photographers. It will be important to remain flexible, trust your local driver guides who will navigate the changing weather patterns each day. Return to your hotel each evening which are ensuite accommodations and have Wi-Fi. Given the timing each day and weather there may be time mid-day or in the evening for photo discussion or lecture.

Faroe has some of the most picturesque landscapes. At every turn, the vistas will astound you. This is one of our planet’s most fascinating and unique environments. Some of the highlights during your time on the Faroe Islands will consist of Gjogv, Gasadalur waterfall, Sorvagsvatn, Saksun, Tjornuvik, Funningur, Nordradalur, and Sornfelli. There will be many more photo ops along the way during your time here that your drivers will share with you.

Gjogv is a friendly and authentic village offering the perfect place to explore the North and East parts of the archipelago. The harbor is quite impressive with the vibrant colors of the houses, playing off the green mountains. Saksun is another picturesque village with a charming church, waterfall, grassy rooftops and a fjord as backdrop. With any luck you will be able to photograph reflections of the surrounding landscape in the lagoon.

Sorvagsvatn Cliffs are an icon of Faroe, giving an illusion that the lake is floating above the ocean. To get to the prime locations the walk can take 45 minutes to an hour. Another location of the cliffs is Bosdalfosur waterfall, which has a sea stack as a backdrop. The walk can be a bit rocky but much easier to get to.

Another icon of Faroe is Gasadalur, a famous waterfall village. Located on the west side of Vagar, it enjoys a panoramic view over to the island of Mykines. Mulafossur translates to the promontory waterfall, with a sheer drop that plunges into the ocean. Mykines is a puffin colonies dream, with stunning coastal views, and dramatic landscape. This outing requires going by ferry. Once you arrive at the harbor there are about 40 steps up to reach the village, and you reach the puffins up a hill with a 30-minute walk.

Given a dry day you’ll make your way to Tjornuvik, it is the northern most village on Streymoy Island. You will be photographing over the harbor to the sea stacks of Risin and Kellingin. There are multiple perspectives to be obtained via a marked path. Another photo location is the Funningur church located right next to the crashing waves.

One of the most unique places to photograph, are two sea stacks placed between the island of Vágar and Tindhólmur islet. Dranganir is a very weather dependent day, as it requires going by Zodiac for fifteen minutes, and then a rugged, semi-steep terrain for just 10 minutes. Well worth the photographic moments.

Last but not least is the southernmost island of Faroe. Suduroy is breathtaking, an island boasting with the Beinisvord cliffs, picturesque Tvoroyri village, and scenic landscapes that capture the feel of the Faroe Islands. A photographers delight. (Breakfast and Dinner each day)
